The community’s generous contribution to Unite in the Fight to beat cancer helped us make a real difference – here’s the ‘top ten’.

In 2009, Cancer Council SA:

1. responded to over 8,000 calls for information and support through the trained staff via Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20

2. linked over 130 people recently diagnosed with cancer, with trained volunteers who have experienced the same type of cancer or treatment, through our telephone based Cancer Connect program

3
. distributed 330,000 resources (including more than 62,000 to cancer treatment centres) to schools, workplaces, healthcare centres and the wider community

4
. invested around $13 million to fund cancer research, prevention and support projects

5
. promoted the SunSmart message to children in all South Australian schools and early childhood centres

6
. managed 670,000 visits to its website – the main portal to all information and services

7
. made more than 4,600 bus trips to transport country people between their city-based accommodation and cancer treatment centres

8
. provided affordable motel accommodation for over 5,000 country people with cancer undergoing treatment in Adelaide, and their carers
